The Cartoonist Residency Program, part of CFCA, Connect for Culture Africa, kicked off on December 9 and will be running until December 19!
Day 1 featured mentor, Cartoonist and Illustrator Paul Kelemba, who shared insights on the history of African cartooning and its role in driving social change. Chrisogon Atukwasize (Ogon), a full-time editorial cartoonist, discussed the creative process, artist styles, and motivations, encouraging participants to reflect on their own experiences. Participants mentioned challenges such as limited resources, low compensation, and the need for the arts to be seen as a legitimate career.
The day wrapped up with plans for each cartoonist to produce three original artworks, along with a collaborative piece. Stay tuned for more updates from this exciting residency!
