“Cultural Abilities” is a project born from the successes of Selam’s past initiatives, including “Inner Vision” and “Scaling Up Inner Vision,” both supported by the Swedish PostCode Lottery, and “Music Leads the Way,” a youth-focused project funded by Forum Syd. Building on the achievements of these projects, Selam seeks further support from Forum Syd to merge their lessons and target groups. Former participants from “Inner Vision” and “Music Leads the Way” will play key roles as project leaders and ambassadors. This project focuses on sighted, visually impaired, and blind young individuals in and around Addis Ababa and Amhara, with the aim of bolstering opportunities for visually impaired or blind culture enthusiasts in Ethiopia while contributing to the development of the country’s cultural sector.
The primary goal is to provide increased opportunities for visually impaired and blind Ethiopian youth, both male and female, to utilize culture as a means of engagement in democratic processes.
To enhance the knowledge and capacity of partners like Circus Debre Berhan and HPD-O (Help for People with Disabilities Organization) in organizing and supporting visually impaired and young people. This will be achieved through a Human Rights Based Approach (HRBA) and active advocacy for human rights in collaboration with various stakeholders such as education and culture authorities, the Ministry of Culture, political parties, culture and education officials, and media channels.
Approximately 230 young women and men aged 15-29 in Addis Ababa and Amhara, including sighted, visually impaired, and blind individuals.
“Cultural Abilities” is a project with a noble mission, bridging gaps and fostering inclusivity in the cultural sector for visually impaired and blind young Ethiopians, empowering them to actively participate in democratic processes through the medium of culture.
